Find an indoor gym, buy a guide book for your local area (I like the Falcon series of guide books) to show you were local crags are, take an indoor or outdoor climbing lesson, and start taking climbing trips with friends.

Good Luck

look in local area for shops that sell outdoor Equipment, they will probably have climbing stuff but it will depend what type of climbing you want to do there's bouldering, rock climbing, sport climbing and a few more . you are lucky havin friends that will go with you.
You can probably rent gear at your local indoor climbing centre and they may have small courses you can do, my local climbing wall (awsome walls liverpoll) does this

Since you are in FL, you will be limited to indoor facilities or you will have to travel to get a guided trip. There is very limited climbing in Southern GA & AL so you really arnt in the best state for this sport. Check out: http://www.indoorclimbing.com/florida.html
It has a list of indoor facilities where you will be able to rent the gear, get classes on what you need to know, etc...
Good luck.

look in your phonebook, the local indoor rock wall is the best place to start. they'll hire you all the gear, teach you to belay etc
plus you'll meet everyone else who's intrested in it, there's usually a message board where people post for climbing partners, and you always have the option of talking to people, to find yourself some outdoor rock...

Where in Florida are you? I went to college down there for 4 years...being from NY and a rock climber I had to find something larger than a sand dune. If your close to Tampa there's a good rock gym there called vertical ventures. You can check them out at www.verticalventures.com. Its a huge gym with both bouldering and climbing. They'll help you with your technique and can introduce you to the sport. I am not sure if they have classes or not.

It would probably be easier to go out with a guide who knows what he or she is doing and have them teach you the basics rather than rent gear...mainly because you'll only be able to rent shoes. There are no shops that I can think of that will rent you a rope or harness to take out and climb. (the rock gym is a controlled environment so they will there) it becomes a liability issue because how do they know what the person who returned the rope used it for and under what conditions. Hope this helps goodluck. Rock On
