I was wondering if there are any (free) videos around on the internet and such that would show me tips to improve my rock climbing. I was at the indoor climbing place in my local area the other day and I noticed a lot of the smaller holds I cant hold onto but other people hold on like its nothing? is there a certain way to help me be able to hold onto the smaller smoother holds?

I can’t help you with online videos – check your local library for training books and videos. But I can help you with your grip strength…
First of all, you need to understand that it’s easier on your arms if you either hang with arms straight, or hands at shoulder level, not in between if you can avoid it.
That said, you should put some effort into training for grip strength, it will allow you to climb harder routes and have more fun.
Warm up by hanging on bigger holds or chinup bar (a hangboard is the most versatile and symetrical) that you stay on for 30+ secs. Then move onto something that you can barely grip. If you can hang on longer than 5 secs, it’s honestly too easy. Find a hang board, or maybe your gym even has a “finger board”. I use the trim on the doorways in my house. Hang for as long as you can (2-5 secs), rest for a minute or 2, and repeat. Watch how fast you improve! Before you know it you will be warming up on that same hold that you started power training on!
Have fun and climb hard!
There are series of Pro Tips videos on YouTube. I don’t know where they came from but I’ve found several of them. They reference a URL that doesn’t seem to work, so I dunno where you could find them all in one place.
Search for “patience lynn hill” on YouTube to find the one w/ her- probably you can find some of the others through the “related” category on YouTube.
I managed to find one or two good videos on youtube. There’s a great one on crack climbing which I have linked to from my blog.
I recently posted a whole series on climbing improvement tips too. Check it out if you get a minute – would love to hear your views.
Cheers, Gareth
